Guyana’s honey production nears 50,000-gallon mark as sector expands

Agriculture is gradually gaining popularity in Guyana as the Ministry of Agriculture hosts its third annual Honey Festival.

The event, held under the theme “Next Generation Hives: Growing Guyana through Green Apiculture”, was held at the ministry’s Regent Street office on Friday.

It provided beekeepers with an opportunity to showcase their products and network with one another.

Delivering the feature address, Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha said the industry has come a long way through ongoing efforts to transform the sector.

“We have transformed this industry… we have come a far way. Honey fest has become more than a showcase of honey and its value,” he said.

The minister announced that Guyana’s honey production increased from 3,745 gallons between 2020 and 2022 to 40,000 gallons in 2025.

“By the end of this year we will be very close to touch the 50,000 gallon mark,” he disclosed.

The minister also emphasised that women must account for at least 35 per cent of participants in every industry in Guyana.

Meanwhile, leading beekeeper and co-founder of Kingdom Apiary Products and Supplies, Linden Stewart, expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts to promote apiculture.

“They have aroused our attention with the way they are approaching beekeeping and the way how they have started to look into the industry, but there is still more to be done, lots more to be done,” he said.

Through a partnership with the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA), Stewart is responsible for training students in apiculture.

He credited training, government support and assistance from the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) with helping the industry grow.

Following the festival, Kingdom Apiary Products and Supplies will represent Guyana at the 13th Beekeeping Congress in Suriname.

Meanwhile, Insaf Piaralall of Mahaicony Honey, who was attending the festival for the first time, described the event as informative and an opportunity for growth.

“It is great. It expands our perspective on what we can do next year. I see more established businesses, so it’s inspiring, and we can take tips from one another,” she said.

What started as a hobby has since developed into a thriving business, she added.

Piaralall also welcomed the government’s efforts to provide training and equipment to people within the sector.

The event featured a honey-tasting competition, with prizes awarded to participants and fashion show.
